STORY: Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir arrived in Cairo on Sunday for a two-day state visit, his first since the election of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Bashir was greeted at the airport by Egyptian Vice President Mahmoud Mekki. He was then met by Mursi at the Presidential Palace.

Amnesty International had called for the withdrawal of the Egyptian invitation to the Sudanese President, if not his arrest, on arrival in the country.

The International Criminal Court has indicted the Sudanese leader for genocide and other crimes in the western Darfur region -- an accusation he denies.

Since the ICC arrest warrant was issued in 2009, Bashir has been able to travel widely to countries including China, Chad, Qatar, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Kenya and Ethiopia - an embarrassment for the global court.
