Following a local protest in February, three prominent Tibetans were detained in Driru county in the Tibet Autonomous Region, according to Radio Free Asia. A clampdown by Chinese authorities has restricted information from the region, but the three men are believed to still be in detention.

The three detained Tibetans are well known locally. They include Ugyen Tenzin a traditional Tibetan medical doctor, who has treated local patients for more than 30 years. A source said that he provided free services to monks, nuns, students and the poor and that the authorities had found no incriminating evidence to charge him, but he was still detained.

The two other detainees are Tenzin Thabkey, a graduate of the Tibet Medical Center who was working as a teacher in Lhasa, and a well respected businessman Nyima Tsering,

The detentions came in late February, following a protest on February 8th by hundreds of residents calling for Chinese authorities to stop interfering with religious affairs. The protesters also called for independence and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

The protest was started by monks from the Pekar Monastery, who left after Chinese Communist Party officials were sent to Pekar and other nearby monasteries to force monks to receive “patriotic education”.

Five truckloads of security forces arrived in Nagchu a day after the protest, and authorities warned local residents that they could be fired upon if they did not “control themselves”.

Many prominent Tibetan citizens have been imprisoned since mass protests swept the Tibet Autonomous Region in 2008. Security has been tight recently and the flow of information has been heavily restricted in the region and neighboring Chinese provinces, where 33 Tibetans have set themselves on fire since 2009.
