The Dalai Lama has been living in exile in India since he fled Tibet as a young man in 1959. Now, the India-based Tibet government-in-exile says the Chinese regime should allow him to return to Tibet. It comes in the wake of a string of self-immolations by Tibetans in China—desperate people protesting suppression.

On Friday, the Tibetan government-in-exile urged the Chinese regime to allow the Dalai Lama to return to Tibet. It came one day after a Tibetan man set himself on fire—the twelfth self-immolation this year, and the first self-immolation in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

[Thubten Samphel, Spokesperson, Tibetan Government-in-Exile]:
"Any responsible government's job is to address or readdress the genuine grievances of the people. And till now the Chinese government has not budged. I think it is time for China to respond positively to the very sincere and very tragic appeals."

Former monk Tenzin Phutsong self-immolated last Friday in Chamdo prefecture. According to rights groups, Chamdo has been under heavy repression and "patriotic education" campaigns.

[Thubten Samphel, Spokesperson, Tibetan Government-in-Exile]:
"So in all the incidences the common refrain is that Tibetans and Tibet want to see His Holiness the Dalai Lama return to Tibet and the other common theme is people in Tibet want freedom."

The Dalai Lama has not condemned or condoned the immolations. But he has said they are due to the desperate conditions Tibetans face under Beijing's rigid controls.

The Dalai Lama has been in exile since 1959, when he and hundreds of Tibetans fled to India.
