Cold weather has affected tomato crops in India's Jharkhand state. And farmers are worried as their livelihood is at stake.

Severe cold destroyed tomato crops in the Ranchi district of India's Jharkhand state.

Farmers are having a tough time with the economic losses.

[Ramsharan Kumar, Farmer]:
"We have invested huge money in irrigation through diesel, but we are not getting any profit out of it."

[Geeta, Farmer]:
"We are getting merely four to five rupees ($0.10) per kilogram for the tomatoes. We have invested money for better production but getting nothing in return for our investment."

Farmers in other parts of the country also fretted over crop damage due to the cold.

Crop damage has remained a worrisome issue for India, as the country is mainly an agriculture-based economy.

About 600 million people of India's billion-plus population rely on agriculture for their livelihood.
