West Bengal, India: Farmers Use Technique to Protect Crops

Farmers in eastern Indai have a new farming method called "poly mulching." It will help farmers to grow their crops year round. Let's take a look.

Farmers in West Bengal have adopted new scientific material called "poly mulching" to protect their crops.

"Poly Mulching" is a protective cover placed over soil through slits or holes in thin plastic sheets.

Farmers believe that the use of “poly mulching” has not only reduced their dependence on pesticide and labor costs, but also the use of strong chemicals during cultivation.

[Subal Sarkar, Farmer]:
"We decided to use this new idea and it has yielded great results. If you use this idea the labor costs are low, less fertilizer is required and it is not affected by rain. The growth of crops is also doubled in comparison to open field cultivation.”

The North Bengal region of India has some highly fertile agricultural land. But weeds, lack of proper sunlight, heavy rain, soil erosion, and cold weather often result in crop damage.

The "poly mulching" technique is expected to enable the farmers to grow crops year round and bring in more income.
