Wag the City

Wag the City is a three year initiative, on-going between 2008 and 2010, by Swedish NGO Spiritus Mundi. Here youths meet over social, cultural and geographical borders through creativity, social issues and international culture dialogue. Wag the City operates in Malmö and in Botkyrka, Stockholm. Wag the City currently runs, with support from the Swedish Inheritance Fund, two main projects: Young Culture Ambassadors and Wag the City Botkyrka. Both projects will lead to a music/drama production each, but the importance of them lies in the new meeting grounds that are created. The music and the cultural expressions are the means, the method and the tool for the successful interaction of the youths.

Young Culture Ambassadors (YCA) is carried out by Wag the City together with several Malmö youth organisations (for example Amnesty International), music and drama coaches and Malmö schools. In total 80 students, ages 13-19, from different city districts in Malmö participate from autumn 2008 to summer 2010. In YCA the youths get acquainted with a number of youth organisations, their work and their issues of interest, and write music and texts together with music coaches. In the autumn of 2009 the work with creating a musical /drama production started. The musical will premiere in May 2010. Each semester of YCA also contains specially invited guests, lectures and discussions on culture dialogue.

Wag the City Botkyrka has a similar programme to that of YCA. 70 students, ages 13-19, from Botkyrka, a municipality outside of Stockholm, participate. The youths in Botkyrka will also write and perform a musical/drama production as well as participate during one number in the Malmö musical.
