Date: November 5, 1985

Venue: Wembley, London

Kaylor stance: orthodox

Christie stance: orthodox

Mark Kaylor turned pro in 1980 and won his first 23 bouts against carefully chosen opposition. He won the British and Commonwealth titles in his 24th fight, when he survived an early knockdown to knockout Roy Gumbs in the fifth round. He suffered his first loss in his next bout when he was disqualified against journeyman Tony Cerda. After a couple of routine wins, Kaylor lost to Buster Drayton in the seventh round, after taking a lot of punishment. Two fights later Kaylor lost on points to Tony SIbson, with the British, Commonwealth and European titles all on the line. Kaylor then knocked out Richard Beranek in the third round and beat fringe contender Dwight Walker on points.

Errol Christie was an excellent junior amateur, and was listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the number of domestic titles he won. Christie turned pro in 1982, and won his first 13 bouts, with 12 ending early. He suffered an unexpected stoppage defeat to Jose Seys. He then won his next seven bouts, all inside the distance. Despite that setback to Seys, Christie was regarded as a potential world champion, and had impressed Emmanuel Steward when he trained at the Kronk Gym.
