Alan Minter vs Sugar Ray Seales in a 10 round non-title fight at middleweight.

Date: December 7, 1976

Venue: Royal Albert Hall, London

Minter stance: southpaw

Seales stance: southpaw

When Sugar Ray Seales became the only American to win a gold medal (light welterweight) at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, many boxing fans thought he would go on to become the next big star. Somehow, it just didn't work out that way. His two most memorable pro fights before facing Minter were against Marvin Hagler - losing the first on points, then getting a draw in their rematch three months later.

By contrast, Alan Minter won a bronze at the Munich Olympics, fighting at light middleweight. He was slowly gaining a reputation as an entertaining boxer-puncher with an unfortunate tendency to suffer cuts around the eyes. He was the reigning British middleweight champion.

Both fighters knew a win would propel them to bigger and better opportunities, while the loser would have to regroup. Seales was tall for a middleweight, at 6'1' (how he boiled down to light weltereight is a mystery), while Minter was just 5'9". As both were considered stylish boxers, who preferred to fight at long range, this looked like a bout that would go the distance.
