Police surround Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus in stand-off with protesters

Police pressed on with their operations to clear anti-government protesters from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus early on Monday, November 18, 2019.  Despite fires and multiple rounds of tear gas, the mostly student protesters remained inside the buildings they have occupied for several days, defying police efforts including a predawn rush on the campus. Protesters who tried to leave the campus but encountered police tear gas that forced many of them to retreat back inside.
