London attacks: Third jihadi named as Moroccan-Italian who tried to join ISIS

LONDON — Questions are being asked of British intelligence services after the identity of the third Islamist terrorist who took part in an attack in London on Saturday was revealed.

Third London Bridge attacker Youssef Zaghba was reportedly 22 years old and lived in East London. He was the son of a Moroccan father and an Italian mother.

Zaghba was stopped by Italian authorities in March 2016 when he tried to travel from Bologna to Istanbul on a one-way ticket carrying only a backpack, the Guardian reported.

Zaghba initially admitted he was leaving to “become a terrorist” and ISIS propaganda was found on his phone.

An Italian court later ruled there was insufficient evidence to charge Zaghba, but his details were flagged on a Europe-wide database of potential terrorists. However, British authorities said he was not a subject of interest for the police or MI5.

Jihadist Zaghba, alongside accomplices Khuram Butt, 27, and Rachid Redouane, 30, killed seven people and injured dozens more in a van and knife attack in London on Saturday.

Like Zaghba, Butt was known to the authorities and last year even appeared in a TV documentary called “The Jihadis Next Door”.
