Clarinet Marmelade (1) The December Band 1965.

For the New Orleans revivalists it was a real treat that day in December 1965. 4 original New Orleans musicians were brought together by the Connecticut Traditional Jazz Society for a concert at the Moose Lodge Hall in Stanford Ct. to play a concert with 4 young local musicians. All this was recorded and is still available on CD’s from GHB Records.

The musicians from New Orleans are Kid Thomas Valentine tpt, Big Jim Robinson tbne, Capt. John Handy alto sax and Sammy Penn drums.
The locals are Bill Sinclair pno, Dick Griffith bjo, Dick McCarthy bass and Sammy Rimington clt.
In this first tune the band plays Clarinet Marmelade. Apparently Kid Thomas decided to go back to the bridge, but is was obviously not made clear enough to the rhythm guys. They just kept playing as if it was another improvisational chorus. All together hardly noticable and everything continued as if it had happened. Later they re-recorded the tune once more.
I remember having played once with Kid Thomas at a festival in Indianapolis in 1976 and it was surely a matter of watching the “Kid” closely to follow him properly through the different tunes.
