A police officer was killed and at least 18 people were wounded, including six civilians when a car bomb exploded outside a police base in Ismailia in northern Egypt on Thursday (December 12).

The bomb was reportedly planted near the gate of a police camp and then detonated remotely. A large amount of explosive material was used, causing a very intense explosion, Al Jazeera reports.

Police and military officials initially said that at least 54 people were injured in the blast but later revised that toll downwards.

According to Reuters, intense gunfire was heard in the area of the police base after the explosion. However, it was not clear if the attack was carried out by the suicide bomber.

Militant attacks on the police and army have risen sharply in Egypt since the army toppled Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on July 3.
