Bombing attack in northwest Pakistan kills at least 20 soldiers

The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for a car bomb attack in northwest Pakistan on Sunday, which killed at least 20 people and injured another 30.
The explosion took place in Bannu on Sunday morning as a military convoy that consisted of about 15 vehicles was about to leave the town for Miranshah. According to local news channel Samaa TV, bombs contained in one civilian vehicle that was hired to transport the soldiers exploded.
"It's not clear if it was a suicide attack or an improvised explosive device," an unidentified military officer said.
The Pakistani branch of Taliban said it was behind the blast. "With the help of God we claim responsibility for this. The army is our enemy. We will carry out many more attacks like this again," Pakistani Taliban spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, told Reuters in a telephone call from an undisclosed location.
The militant group pledged to launch more attacks on security forces earlier after Mullah Fazlullah was elected to helm the organisation.
At least 20 people died in the explosion. While many soldiers were killed, authorities did not verify if any civilians were killed. Authorities also warned that the death toll is likely to rise.
