At least 30 Syrian government soldiers were killed by a large bomb place in a tunnel detonated beneath a military checkpoint, Syrian opposition activists say.
The target for the attack was a government checkpoint near the town Ma'arat al-Nu'man in Syria's northwestern Idlib province says the Britain-based activist group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Sixty fighters with the Islamic Front and Shields of the Revolution Council took 50 days to complete the tunnel, which extended more than 200 meters. In it they placed a large amount of an unknown explosive.
Opposition fighters routinely use such methods to attack regime checkpoints and headquarters.
The huge blast killed at least 30 government soldiers as well as two opposition officers.
The Britain-based activist group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, says the checkpoint was one of the last lines of defence for the Wadi Deif military base, one of the last regime strongholds in Idlib province.
Reuters reports that "more than 150,000 people have been killed in the three-year-old rebellion, which started as a peaceful protest movement and turned into a civil war after a government crackdown.
"International powers have been deadlocked over how to resolve the conflict, further complicated by infighting between rebel groups that has killed thousands of fighters this year."
