Islamic State fighters shoot down a Syrian warplane

Islamic State militants have shot down a Syrian warplane, according to this video posted to a social media website.

It's the first time the group, which used anti-aircraft guns, has blown a fighter jet from the sky.

Fighters could be seen gathering up pieces of the aircraft, which crashed outside the IS stronghold of Raqqa, some 250 miles northeast of Damascus.

Syrian forces have been bombing the area daily since Islamic State militants seized the Iraqi city of Mosul.

The Sunni Extremist group has emerged as the dominant opposition group, forcing the government to fight on a number of different fronts. Within hours of downing the jet in Raqqa, IS targeted this military complex in Aleppo. Fighters are well aware that a victory here, in the country's largest city, could signal a tide change and put them closer to their goal to create an Islamic caliphate across Syria and Iraq.
