Off the field news dominated events at the World Cup on Thursday as FIFA announced a nine-match ban for Uruguay's serial biter Luis Suarez.

The ban rules Suarez out of the rest of the tournament while effectively rendering the South American side toothless in attack."

Back on the field, the day's big game saw team U-S-A go head to head with perennial World Cup powerhouse Germany. With both teams needing just a point to advance most observers predicted a draw.

But Thomas Mueller obviously didn't read the script, netting as Germany triumphed 1-0.

Luckily for the US Ronaldo came to the rescue, scoring the winner as Portugal defeated Ghana 2-1, ensuring Jurgen Klinsmann's men a last 16 tie with Belgium.

Algeria, meanwhile, surprised everyone, including themselves probably, by reaching the last 16 for the first ever time.

Islam Slimani was the hero, taking advantage of the Russian keeper's apparent temporary blindness after a laser was shone into his face to head the Desert Foxes level and ensure a spot in the knockout stage.

Algeria now face Germany, where they will be looking for revenge for it's controversial 1982 World Cup exit, when West Germany and Austria were accused of match fixing.
