Syria airstrike: Nusra Front commander Abu Humam killed in strike by Syrian military
  • 9 years ago
The Nusra Front confirmed on Thursday that a senior commander of the group was killed in an apparent Syrian military airstrike.

The airstrike in the town of Salqin in Idlib province on Thursday killed Abu Humam al-Shami, general military commander of the Nusra Front.

According to Reuters, Al-Shami was in a meeting with several other Nusra Front commanders when the airstrike occurred.

Insurgent sources told Reuters that a U.S.-led coalition airstrike hit the meeting, but this was not confirmed by a coalition spokesman. Reuters reported that the Syrian military said it had carried out the attack.

At least three other Nusra commanders were also killed in the airstrike. The Sunni Muslim militant group is loyal to al Qaeda and split from ISIS, which regards al Qaeda as insufficiently radical.
