Kurdish fighters shot four Canadian soldiers after mistaking them for ISIS militants on Friday night. According to Kurdish officials, the four members of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment approached the Kurdish front line unannounced.

The four Canadian soldiers, according to Kurdish officials, were sent to help Kurdish forces direct airstrikes in the area near a village in Bashiqa, north of Mosul. Kurdish officials say the area has seen intensive fighting between Peshmerga fighters and ISIS militants. The four Canadians approached Bashiqa last Friday night at 11 p.m. local time.

According to Canadian Defence Minister Jason Kenney, the soldiers stopped 200 metres from the Kurdish front line. Kurdish fighters at an observation post stopped the Canadian soldiers and asked them who they were. When the soldiers replied in Arabic, the Kurdish fighters opened fire. The Canadian soldiers’ driver stopped the shooting, warning the Kurdish fighters that the men were members of the Canadian special forces.

A helicopter brought the soldiers to a hospital in the Iraqi city of Irbil. One of the soldiers, Sergeant Andrew Joseph Doiron, 31, died after being transported to the hospital.

The Canadian government and Kurdish officials continue to differ in their accounts on the circumstances surrounding the incident that resulted in Doiron’s death. According to Canadian officials, the soldiers were not at the village to conduct airstrikes and did not come unannounced.

Doiron is the first Canadian soldier to be killed in the coalition war against the Islamic State.
