Famous Sea Otter 'Olive' Dies After Being Bitten By Shark

A sea otter called Olive gained nationwide attention after she was found stranded on a beach in Monterey Bay covered in oil. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has confirmed that Olive has died.

A sea otter called Olive gained nationwide attention in 2009 after she was found stranded on a beach in Monterey Bay covered in oil. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced on Thursday that Olive has died. 

A Facebook page dedicated to the sea otter notes, "Olive’s body was discovered near Sunset State beach on Sunday, March 22, 2015. Our examination found wounds consistent with a shark bite, and we recovered a large, serrated tooth fragment from a white shark in one of the wounds."
