Wisconsin’s Apostle Ice Caves Finally Open Thanks To Deep Freeze

Lake Superior’s waters finally reached a freezing point that allowed for the opening of Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands ice caves.

The first official day of spring is rapidly approaching, but it doesn’t appear that winter is ready to let go quite yet.

Just recently, Lake Superior’s waters reached a freezing point that allowed for the opening of Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands ice caves. 

The caves themselves are a result of sandstone being eroded over time by crashing waves. 

As the water that leaks into them freezes it forms a canopy of icicles and one seriously dazzling spectacle. 

It doesn’t always get cold enough for them to be deemed safe to travel to and explore, however, and last year was the first in five that the frosty environment was open to the public. 

When it is accessible, people show up in droves.
