The first hostage to run from the Sydney cafe siege has spoken to the media of his relief after escaping the deadly stand-off on Monday (December 15) night.

Eighty-three-year-old hostage John O'Brien said he wanted a cup of coffee after a visit to the doctor and said he was grateful he was now at home with his wife.

"I'm still talking to the New South Wales police, so I can't go into details about what happened inside the coffee shop...All I was doing on that Monday morning was going down for a quick coffee at the Lindt coffee shop after having gone to the eye doctor to have an eye check-up. I never felt so much relief as when I turned that corner and saw the armed police waiting for me. I am so grateful to be home with my lovely wife, Maureen, and we'd both like to thank the media who have remained respectful and to everyone in Australia for their kindness and support. Your thoughts and prayers mean a great deal. Thank you very much,"
