Sydney siege hostage Katrina Dawson killed by police gunfire, inquest hears

An inquest into the deadly Sydney cafe siege revealed that one of the two hostages who died during the standoff was killed by fragments of police bullets.
Two hostages, Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson, were killed along with gunman Man Haron Monis during the Sydney cafe siege in December.
The counsel assisting the coroner’s inquest, Jeremy Gormly, told the inquest today that Johnson was forced to kneel on the floor of the cafe before being shot dead by Monis. He died immediately.
None of the bullets fired by Monis struck any of the other hostages aside from Johnson, “although he appears to have been trying to do so,” Gormly said.
Police stormed the cafe after they saw Monis shoot Johnson. Eleven flash bangs were thrown into the cafe and 22 shots were fired by police. Monis fired a total of five rounds from his sawn-off shotgun during the stand-off.
At least two bullets, police bullets or bullet fragments hit Monis in the head, and 11 other bullets, police bullets or fragments hit his body.
Dawson was hit by six fragments of a police bullet or bullets that ricocheted from hard surfaces into her body. One bullet fragment struck one of her major blood vessels, causing her to lose consciousness and die shortly afterwards.
The inquest will also investigate Monis’s claims that the siege was an attack on Australia by the Islamic State and whether he was linked to any terrorist groups, although “at present it seems he had not established any contact,” Gormly said.
