Iran, powers set to miss nuclear talks deadline

With the deadline looming for the Iran nuclear talks in Vienna, all signs are pointing toward extending the deadline.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told German television that Iran and the six world powers are "still far apart on many issues."

He added that if a deal isn't reached, the talks can be continued.

His comments echoed that of French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who told reporters much work remains.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTER LAURENT FABIUS SAYING:

"I won't anticipate the result, but we're continuing the work. We have a final deadline of tomorrow night to find an agreement, but it has to be positive and enable us to work for peace."

The group had given itself a Monday deadline.

A U.S. official said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed the possible extension on Sunday.

The official did not reveal any other options.
