More than two million pilgrims have arrived in Mecca for haj pilgrimage, with another million expected to join them in the world's largest annual gathering of Muslims, according to Saudi authorities.

Haj is a religious journey that is viewed as one of the Muslim faith's greatest acts of worship.

Gathered at the Grand Mosque in Mecca on Saturday, visitors wearing the simple white folds of cloth prescribed for haj prayed to the calling of muezzin.

With temperatures hitting 36 celsius (96.8F), many congregated in the cooler shadow of the building's minarets.

Haj occurs in the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, called Dhul-Hijjah.
