An American man who cycled through more than 50 countries for charity and peace has tragically been killed in Russia. 61-year-old Ron McGerity was struck by a truck on a country road.

The driver was reportedly drunk and fled the scene after hitting McGerity. Police later caught up with the suspect and arrested him.

McGerity was cycling alone at the time he was killed. The victim had traveled to Russia with the hopes of touring a set of ancient towns around Moscow known as The Golden Ring.

The so-called 'peace cyclist’ was born in Boston but in recent days he called Geneva home. He started his pedaling journey back in 1995. Over the course of nearly 20 years, he traveled to four continents spreading peace and raising money for charity.

Two days before his death, McGerity ventured to the Russian city of Kostroma, where he met the mayor.

In light of his unexpected passing, the mayor remarked “Even the short time of our meeting was enough to understand how open, sincere, honest, and joyful this man was. We'll remember him as a true enthusiast who had inexhaustible energy and enormous love of life and people.”
