Val Lewton this is NOT, but it is the only serious horror offering released in the US in 1948, as the horror cycle wound down ahead of the Fifties' fascination with aliens, atomic menaces, and bug-eyed monsters (or monstrous bugs). The other, not-so-serious horror of 1948 was "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein".
