JAPAN - Overfishing and the global appetite for bluefin tuna: can Tokyo turn the tide?

For years environmentalists have been sounding the alarm: the global appetite for bluefin tuna is pushing the species to the brink of extinction. Japan, the world’s number one consumer, catches and consumes an estimated 80% of the Pacific’s bluefin tuna. In an effort to protect its culinary tradition and the many businesses which rely on tuna – and fishing in general - Tokyo recently announced it would cut by half their catch of young tuna. Will this be enough to turn the tide?
