The images from a purported ISIL Twitter account are unsettling.

Men shielding themselves from what might be gunfire. Another shows people running, some with their hands on their heads and one man with what looks like blood stains.

Most disturbing are what appears to be a mass execution -- fighters aiming weapons at a row of men.

One of the captions references Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

It warns "This is the fate of the Shi'ites which Nouri brought to fight Sunnis" over what appears to be an execution scene.

Reuters cannot independently confirm the content of these images which were uploaded to the popular social media website.

The Twitter account, believed to belong to the Sunni group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, was suspended 10 hours later.
