ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

Clashes broke out between pro-Russian protesters and riot police outside the regional administration building in the east Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv on Monday (April 7) night as unrest spread across the region.

Video footage showed crowds of protesters shouting "Russia, Russia" pushing against riot police lined up against the front of the building.

Several protesters were detained.

Ukraine says the seizure of public buildings in eastern regions on Sunday night is a replay of events in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula Moscow annexed last month after a referendum was staged when Russian troops were already in control.

The pro-Russian protesters in Ukraine have been demanding that referendums be held on whether to join Russia like the vote, dismissed by Kiev and the West as illegal, that endorsed Crimea's return to rule by Moscow.
