Daft Punk wins five Grammys with Pharrell Williams for Get Lucky
  • 10 years ago
Daft Punk, the popular French brand of musical robot, has swept up top honors at the 2014 Grammys. The mysterious masked duo won Best Engineered Album, Best Dance Album, Best Pop Duo and most importantly, Album of the Year and Record of the Year! Since the Frenchmen at the heart of Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, don't talk in public anymore, they invited Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers to do the acceptance speeches.

The album, Random Access Memories, had a long and semi-legendary development phase, with Daft Punk bringing in aged disco musicians for their skills and credentials. The product was an album with such a high level of anticipation that days before its official release, somebody managed to snag a copy and upload the torrent file, which became an instant hit. To torture their fans even more, the most popular song, Get Lucky, didn't even have a music video for many months, giving rise to a closet industry of spoof Daft Punk videos on YouTube (this video isn't a spoof, its news!)

Now with the whole event behind them, and riding a fresh wave of acclaim, Daft Punk should start looking toward the future and get working on their next album. If traveling back in time 40 years to the Disco Age brought this amount of success, the logical next step would be to take a quantum leap backward, back to the dawn of vertebrate life on land! Only a truly primal sound from hundreds of billions of years ago will cut to the very RNA of the human funk genome!
