North Korea frees Chinese fishing crew

A Chinese news report announced on Tuesday North Korea's release of a Chinese fishing boat and its crew.

The boat and its 16 crew members were captured off the coast of Liaoning province, which borders North Korea. Radio contact with the vessel was lost at around 10pm on May 5th.

A local fisherman reported seeing the boat led into North Korean territorial waters by a North Korean Navy patrol boat.

The ship's Dalian-based owner, Yu Xuejun, was informed the next morning of the ship's disappearance by a captain of another ship he owns.

The next day he received the first of multiple calls demanding a $200,000 ransom for the safe return of the ship.

The ship and its crew, which Yu believed were held near the island of Changyon, are on their way home.

The People's Daily report failed to note whether the ransom was paid.
