Swing ride accident: Zumur injures children at Norwalk Oyster Festival, Connecticut

A swing ride accident at Norwalk Oyster Festival, Connecticut, has injured a dozen children. Stewart Amusement, which operates the ride known as the Zumur, has shut down the ride for inspection.

Of the 13 people transported to hospitals following the accident, one was an adult and 12 were children. Norwalk police said an 8-year-old boy was admitted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries while the others treated and released.

The Zumur is a swing ride that builds momentum and spins occupants around. An unexplained mechanical failure caused the ride to suddenly stop.

This caused occupants to jerk around in their seats as momentum carried them forward. Police said occupants collided with each other in their chairs. Witnesses said some occupants were ejected from the ride, but State Police said there was no evidence of this.

Following the accident, Norwalk Seaport Association ordered Stewart Amusement to shut down all the rides at the fair. After an inspection check was completed, other rides were re-opened. The Norwalk Oyster Festival is a three-day event.

Festival organizers said on Facebook: "Our first and only concern is for the wellbeing of those involved and their families," the statement said.

At witness at the scene wrote at TheHour.com: "I witnessed this ride failure. Very scary. ... The ride was full and the swings were at the most outer position due to the centrifugal force under full power. Then there was a noise and it seemed to lose power. ... Many people ran over to help. I called 911 and by the time the call went through, sirens were already ringing and firemen and police were already on the scene. Emergency response was within minutes. Festival organizers seemed to respond quickly too."
