Washington Monument Under Repair Looking Better Than Ever
  • 11 years ago
Even though it’s under construction and covered in mesh, the Washington Monument is looking pretty incredible, especially at night.

The Washington monument is the 2nd tallest stone monument and the tallest obelisk in the world. Even though the monument, which is made of nearly 36,500 blocks of marbles, is under construction and covered in mesh, it is looking pretty incredible, especially in the evening.

The combination of the lights and the scaffolding lend it an electrified, lively mood that’s in great contrast to its typically somber stance.

At about 550 feet, the monument was the tallest structure in the world when finished. It was completed 30 years after the death of its architect, Robert Mills. Its inner walls consist of nearly 190 carved stones donated by various individuals, states and countries. There is a difference in color of the marbles which reflects monument's multiple phases of construction.

Repairs on the monument, which was damaged during an earthquake, began in June.
During the 2011 quake, the obelisk was badly shaken and much of the mortar cracked. The force of the disaster caused a stone to move out of place.

What do you think? Does it look better with the mesh or without it?
