“I am the River” is the newest self-produced album from indie-folk artist Sam Peters. The focus of this collection of songs is the lyrics. Peters playfully muses upon love, reminisces honestly about family and considers mortality. While listening to his delicate finger picking work you can’t help but get lured in by the lullaby-like simplicity of the songs.

There is a lot of substance to this album, exploring a wide breadth of musical language, from the comical to the complex. Songs like “Peanut Butter Wishes,” “I Know Every Raindrop” (featuring Susanna Hoffs) and “My Pillow” have such a sing-a-long like quality that you feel like you’ve dreamt them before, whereas songs like “I am the River” and “The Train on the Hill” reflect an emotional depth and intimacy that takes you somewhere else entirely.

Peters points to the musical environment in his childhood as an early inspiration for his own calling to make music. Listening to the poetry of Dylan, Paul Simon, and John Lennon proved to be a more important education than his formal schooling.
Sam grew up in Topanga Canyon, a breeding ground for talented artists, and many of his old schoolyard friends made contributions to the completion of this album. Most notably: Joe Karnes (Pedestrian, John Kale, Imperial Drag, Five for Fighting) on Bass, Eric Lynn on Rhodes, Adam Marcello (Katy Perry) on drums and Jeremy Dolan (Stomp) on percussion.
Following your calling and earning a living in music are, for many, mutually exclusive concepts, but Sam Peters has done both. For the last 10 years he has privately taught guitar lessons and has placed his music in multiple films, television, music libraries as well as on the web. He has also recently finished scoring a documentary. A more complete list of his credits as well as the compositions themselves can be found at www.sampeters.com
