German Foreign Minster Guido Westerwelle met with Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Friday (May 17) where he reiterated Germany's support for Israel in what he described as "very difficult times" for the Jewish state.

Netanyahu said the region was facing the biggest upheaval for many decades, adding that the rapidly changing environment was posing many challenges for Israel.

"I will travel to wherever needed, I will meet with whoever is needed, and I am doing whatever is needed to protect the security of the citizens of Israel," he added.

Westerwelle said Germany was ready to help.

"In these very difficult times, Germany stands side by side with Israelis. We support Israel and we want to work together as a close friend and partner," Westerwelle said.

Westerwelle was due to have lunch with Netanyahu before meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres.
