Sindh Madressatul Islam college elevated to the status of university by Governor Sindh.

Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan handed over the charter of the Sindh Madressatul Islam (SMI) University and a letter of appointment to the institute's first Vice-Chancellor (VC), Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh, at a ceremony held at the Governor's House.

Addressing the ceremony, the Governor congratulated President Asif Ali Zardari, who ordered the elevation of the SMI College to a university. He also congratulated Vice-Chancellor Dr Shaikh, Sindh Assembly members, old students and the whole nation on the elevation of the alma mater of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

"It is a historic day and moment for me personally and for the whole nation to know that the SMI has been elevated to the university level. I feel proud that I am giving the charter of University to the alma mater of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, at his house (Governor House)".

He said that after taking charge of the office of governor, he decided that he would promote three historic institutions to the level of university and these were Dow Medical College, which was his alma mater, SM Law College and the SMI.

In 2003, Dow Medical College received university status, today the SMI was receiving the charter of University and it has been decided in principle that S.M. Law College would be given university status soon, he further said.

The SMI was first elevated to the college level by Quaid-e-Azam himself and now it was being elevated to the university level, Ebad added. He assured the SMI VC Dr Shaikh of all assistance needed for the development of the university and resolving its problem of shops built around the campus. He also said he would also ensure 100 acres of land for the institute in education city.

Senior Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq, in his speech said, "Today we have repaid that debt owed to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah by elevating his alma mater to a university status. Earlier, Dr Shaikh gave a detailed presentation on the history of SMI and efforts taken for its elevation to university level.
