The towering frame of "the Jet Star" roller coaster, washed out to sea by Superstorm Sandy got dismantled and removed more than six months later on Tuesday (May 14). Crews began tearing down the Jet Star and other amusement park rides submerged in the Atlantic Ocean, nearby the boardwalk of the beach community of Seaside Heights, New Jersey.
The cleanup was expected to take about 48 hours according to Casino Pier, which owns the rides.
Afterwards, a thorough sweep through the ocean floor was promised.
The giant structure was a reminder of the storm that slammed into New Jersey on October 29, ravaging the coastline, causing $30 billion (USD) in damage.
Casino Pier is planning to open a temporary replacement for the Jet Star called "Superstorm," named after Sandy to symbolize the resilience of New Jersey residents. It will swing thrillseekers on a giant pendulum.
