A policeman lies bleeding after being shot outside the prime minister's office in the Italian capital Rome.

Close by, a man believed to be the shooter is pinned to the ground.

Two officers were shot in the incident which took place as the new government of Prime Minister Enrico Letta was being sworn in at the presidential palace one kilometre away.

One of the officers was shot in the neck and police say he is in a serious condition. Another was hit in the leg and was less seriously hurt.

Italian media said a passer-by had also been injured but not seriously.

It was not immediately clear whether the attack was linked to the launch of the new government, but the episode came at a time of bitter political division with rising social tensions exacerbated by a long economic slump.
