Five people were killed and at least eight others wounded late Thursday (April 25) in a powerful explosion outside one of the election offices of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), one of the strongest political parties in Karachi.

The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack on MQM.

The TTP has repeatedly declared that democracy is 'un-Isalmic', and has issued threats of attacks on MQM, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) - all of which are secular parties.

This is the third attack on MQM in the run-up to May 11 general elections.

On Tuesday (April 23), a bomb exploded in the commercial capital Karachi near a gathering of activists of the Muttahida Quami Movement, the dominant political party in the city.

Police said two people were killed in that explosion.
