The question of chemical weapons in Syria

There's little debate about the ongoing violence in Syria.

This amateur video which could not be independently verified by Reuters shows a familiar scene across the country.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in more than two years of violence.

The question arising now -- are chemical weapons being used.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel weighed in at trip to the United Arab Emirates.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY CHUCK HAGEL, IN AN EXCHANGE WITH REPORTERS, AND SAYING:

"The U.S. intelligence community assesses with some degree of varying confidence that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically the chemical agent sarin."

The disclosure, made by the White House in a letter to Congress moves the US closer to declaring that Syria has crossed a "red line"

"We still have
