Palestinians protest over prisoner death

Hundreds of Palestinians attended a funeral procession on Thursday (April 4) for a prisoner whose death of cancer in Israeli jail two days ago rapidly raised tensions in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Maysara Abu Hamdeya was serving a life sentence in an Israeli jail.

Palestinians accuse Israel of withholding care from the man and failing to release him after diagnosing that his illness was terminal. Israel says it followed normal procedures.

Fatah militants opened their weapons and fired in the air as they expressed anger over the death of Abu Hamdeya at the funeral procession.

Abu Hamdeya, who was serving a life term for a planned attack on a Jerusalem cafe in 2002, was buried in Hebron today.
