Second day of West Bank clashes

Tensions are flaring in the West Bank where Palestinians are protesting for a second day, after a prisoner held in Israeli custody died of cancer.

Young Palestinians threw stones at Israeli soldiers Wednesday in Hebron.

The soldiers fired back with tear gas and stun grenades.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Israel had ignored a request to free 64-year-old Maysara Abu Hamdeya who was serving a life sentence for recruiting a bomber to blow up a Jerusalem cafe.

Israel said the prisoner died at a hospital Tuesday, a few days after he began the first stages of an early release process.

Protesters also staged demonstrations Wednesday near an Israeli checkpoint and outside a prison compound.

In recent weeks, Palestinians have held several protests in support of prisoners.
