Heavy shelling in Damascus

Heavy shelling in Damascus.

Amateur video which could not be independently verified by Reuters appears to show parts of Syria's Capital City under attack.

The video comes amid reports of a new exodus flowing from Syria as fighting edges closer to the heart of Damascus. Those who swore they would never flee are selling belongings to escape a battle now raging on their doorsteps.

March was the bloodiest month to date in Syria's more than two-year-old civil war, with an estimated 6,000 people killed.

Footage from Aleppo shows residents climbing through rubble in search of signs of life.

A man turns to the camera and asks -- "this is what Basha al-Assad promised us? This is reform? He and his family and supporters are worth less than a shoe"

More than 1 million Syrian refugees have already left, with thousands more fleeing daily -- in a war that has already claimed 70,000 lives.
