Flash floods kill at least 10 people in Mauritius

Helplessness in Mauritius, as people get swept away by flood waters.

It's thought THEY were later saved, but others were not so lucky.

Flash floods hit this island nation in the Indian Ocean Saturday, killing ten people.

Emergency services recovered the bodies of victims on Sunday, most of whom were trapped in this underpass in the capitol, Port Louis.

By Monday, a full scale clean-up and aid operation was in effect.

But some residents say they're pulling themselves out from the sludge -- on their own.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) UNIDENTIFIED RESIDENT, SAYING:

"We had just come back home and I was there with my mother and father...No one has come. We had to do everything ourselves."

Monday's been declared a national day of mourning.

It's not clear if residents are out of the woods just yet.
