Actor Richard Griffiths, best known for his roles in the 'Harry Potter' films, 'Withnail and I' and 'The History Boys,' has died at the age of 65 through complications following heart surgery.

Known for his portly figure and character acting, Griffiths won numerous awards for his theatre work, not only in London's West End but also on Broadway.

His characterisation of Uncle Monty in 'Withnail and I' made him a cult figure worldwide, while his portrayal as the wicked Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter movies gave him a more widespread fame.

He worked with Daniel Radcliffe again in the acclaimed run of the play "Equus" in London's West End. Radcliffe led tributes saying "any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence. I am proud to say I knew him."
