A legacy of loss in Basra some 10 years after the U.S. led invasion of Iraq.

A widow surrounded by her children lost her husband when he was shot dead by U.S. forces when he was driving on the highway in 2011.

(SOUNDBITE) (ARABIC) BASRA NAJIM, KAMIL'S WIFE, SAYING:

" We expected a better life when U.S. forces came to Iraq. But contrary to our expectations the situation got worse, and in the end I lost my husband. I have no breadwinner in this world now, and I have six kids, I could do not imagine that my life would be changed like this. I do not know how it happened !"

One of her sons still mourns the man he says was his friend. He blames the Americans.

Another man joined by family and friends wonders how he will get his life back after he was shelled by a British helicopter while playing football.
