Just over a decade ago, women in this ultra-conservative society were banned from working under the Taliban.
But today, as they mark International Women's Day, many women feel there is a long way to go.
Those who pursue careers are ostracized.
Those who interact with men other than their husbands or relatives are punished.

Somia Jan is one of 90 women working here.
Even though she earns 250 US dollars a month, Somia says she still receives constant badgering for working - and being away from home.
Women's activist Neda Kihani was shot in the leg for promoting women's rights.
But she vows to continue the fight.
Meanwhile, some activists and female army officers marked the day by taking a military helicopter flight around Kabu
