Washington shuts down, braces for "snowstorm"
Washington came to a near standstill Wednesday in preparation for what forecasters say may be the worst snowstorm to hit the area in two years.

The storm has already blanketed much of nearby Virginia...though the U.S. capital by midday had just seen a mix of rain and snow with little accumulation...far less than the 12 inches, or 30 centimeters, predicted by some.

Schools, local and federal agencies closed -- but Congress remained in session.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SENATE MAJORITY LEADER, SENATOR HARRY REID SAYING:

"Mr. President, we all know the weather is inclement. It's getting worse I saw coming in here."

Nearly 700 area flights were canceled and 60,000 homes and businesses in Virginia were without power.
