"My heart is broken, Chavez took a piece of my heart."
Allies of the socialist leader hope that grief will help ensure the survival of his self-styled revolution when voters elect a successor.
Even his detractors had words of support.
(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) VENEZUELAN, JULIO PASTOR, SAYING:
"I think the best future for Venezuela is one without Chavez, but he leaves a legacy -- I don't share his ideas, but he leaves positive things for the country."
Chavez died Tuesday after a two-year battle with cancer.
His body will be taken to a military academy to lie in state for three days.
