At least two people are dead and 14 wounded after an attack on the tourist resort island of Guam on Wednesday.

A man -- identified by local media as 21-year-old Chad Desoto -- crashed a car into a local store before he began stabbing bystanders seemingly at random.

The attack began after Desoto left the Globe nightclub on Guam's west coast.

He allegedly hit pedestrians with his car before crashing into the convenience store at the Outrigger Resort.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED EYEWITNESS SAYING:

"Two Japanese -- a couple -- got knocked down. One Japanese guy, he died instantly. Then there's a lady with two daughters and one was inside the bush and they were still breathing. And there was another one on the floor and her body was all contorted and everything."

Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted local hospital staff as saying that two Japanese women, aged 28 and 82, had died.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry added that 11 other Japanese nationals were wounded, including an 8-month-old baby and a 2-year-old child.

Visitors from Japan are the mainstay of Guam's tourist industry.
